Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals recalled second baseman Johnny Giavotella from Triple-A Omaha Friday and optioned pitcher Michael Mariot to Omaha.
Giavotella appeared in one game with the Royals earlier this season and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Over 24 games at Omaha this year, the 26-year-old infielder batted .352 with nine doubles, one home run and 13 RBI.
Giavotella is expected to fill in for second baseman Omar Infante, who's been dealing with stiffness and spasms in his lower back.
Mariot, 25, made his major league debut with the Royals on April 11 and allowed seven runs in 10 2/3 innings over six games.
