Running back Jamaal Charles wasn’t expected to play in the Chiefs’ opener Sunday, and he won’t.
Charles was listed as inactive for the game against the Chargers, which will kick off at noon at Arrowhead Stadium.
Charles tore an anterior cruciate ligament during the fifth game last season. He returned to practice toward the end of training camp, but the Chiefs have been cautious about Charles’ return to game action.
As they did in Charles’ absence last season, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West are expected to get the bulk of the carries in Sunday’s game.
Also inactive: quarterback Tyler Bray, wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas, cornerback KeiVarae Russell, offensive tackle Bryan Witzmann and defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches.
Among the inactive players for the Chargers is rookie defensive end Joey Bosa, the overall No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft who sat out training camp and preseason games because of a contract dispute. After joining the team, Bosa injured a hamstring.
