GM officials says that the company is driven to race

INDIANAPOLIS | In the midst of tough times for the American auto industry, there are rumblings that General Motors is reconsidering its commitment to racing.

Terry Donlan, Chevrolet’s manager of racing, talked about that on Thursday.

Donlan said Chevy was examining all expenditures — racing included — to see whether they were moving the company forward.

But, he said, racing is “part of our DNA. We build cars, we race cars and we are natural-born competitors. We compete successfully both on the track with a variety of manufacturers, and we plan on continuing to do so.”

BLANEY WINS AT PEVELY: Ken Schrader had his annual all-star race Wednesday night at the short track he owns near Pevely, Mo.

And the winner was Sprint Cup driver Dave Blaney, a former dirt-track champion who now drives for Bill Davis Racing.

Finishing behind Blaney were Brendan Gaughan of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series and Cup drivers Terry Labonte and Tony Stewart.

“I love coming out here,” said Blaney, the 1997 World of Outlaws champion. “I’ll do whatever for Kenny. He’s got a great racetrack here and great fans. Even when I came here and raced with the (World of Outlaws series) in the ‘80s and ‘90s, it was a great place to come. I really enjoyed it, and want to thank everyone for coming out. I hope they had fun.”

LABONTE GETS RIDE: Gillett Evernham Motorsports said Thursday that Terry Labonte would drive the No. 10 Charter Dodge in the Aug. 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. Labonte, 51, the 1984 and 1996 Sprint Cup series champion, will sub for Patrick Carpentier, who is racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series that weekend in his hometown of Montreal.

STREMME’S NAME DROPPED: The search for a driver to replace Ryan Newman at Penske next season continues. One of the names being mentioned is David Stremme, who is racing for Rusty Wallace in the Nationwide series.

Penske driver Kurt Busch hesitated when asked about Stremme, “I think that you’re right in mentioning his name. It wouldn’t be my place to bring up the names of the others. I’ve been through a contract negotiation and a process of switching teams.”
