Wallaces to make history as first father-daughter race rivals

More News

This is no gimmick or publicity stunt. Mike Wallace and Chrissy Wallace want to be taken seriously.

On Saturday, they’ll make NASCAR history as the first father and daughter to race against each other when they drive in the Camping World Trucks Series at Talladega Superspeedway.

“Hopefully, I’ll wind up beating him,” Chrissy said.

Fathers and sons have competed against each other in the trucks series — Mike and Dustin Skinner, the late Bobby Hamilton and Bobby Hamilton Jr. and Ron Hornaday Jr. and Ronnie Hornaday have traded paint.

But the Wallaces, who originally hailed from St. Louis, will add another chapter to the proud legacy of one of NASCAR’s grand families. Mike’s brother, Kenny, a Nationwide Series regular, will serve as spotter for his niece, Chrissy, while older brother Rusty, a former Sprint Cup champion, will watch from the broadcast booth.

“There’s not many people that say they get to drive race cars at Talladega Superspeedway with their daughter,” said Mike Wallace, a 20-year NASCAR veteran.

“We never set out to do anything like this,” said Mike Wallace, 50. “I never even thought my daughter would drive race cars but then I realized she was pretty good at it.”

Chrissy, 21, had a full scholarship to catch for the Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) College softball team but at the time was racing late models and decided to choose racing over softball. Last year, she competed for Germain Racing in six trucks series races, including an 18th-place finish at Martinsville; and two ARCA series races, highlighted by a ninth-place finish at Talladega.

“When I first started racing, it was more for fun because I was more interested in boys, playing softball and basketball,” said Chrissy, the first female driver to win a late model stock car race in the 56-year history at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway. “Then, last year running with Germain (Racing) proved to me that I could do the same thing I’d always wanted to do and prove that girls can do it just as well as guys can.”

Rick Ware Racing and ECR Motors saw something in her and decided to give Chrissy a chance at Talladega and at least two trucks races in 2010.

“It is a big deal that I’m going to go there and run there, especially against my dad,” Chrissy said. “My big goal in everything is running really well, catching people’s eye, proving to other drivers and car owners that I can run really well. I just need the time, I need the support.

“It is something that I really wanted to do. I’ve always really wanted to race. And that was one of the big reasons I gave up a scholarship to go to school is so that I could do my dream.”

While Mike Wallace is proud of Chrissy, he’s not relishing watching the middle of his three children negotiating traffic at speeds near 200 mph on the superspeedway track.

“I’m still her father and I don’t want to see anything happen to her. … I don’t want to see her get hurt,” Mike said. “I watched her run the ARCA race last year. … Kenny and I spotted for her, and to be totally honest, I got very nervous. I have confidence in her ability but you’re just not sure what the competitors around her are going to do.

“It’s going to be a typical Talladega truck race. It’s going to be three and four wide, six, seven rows deep, a lot of action.”

Mike and Chrissy have been on the track once before in a Legends race, where Chrissy won the heat, but the old man won the feature. So she has a little payback in mind.
