Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber scored in back-to-back matches last week for the first time in his four-year Major League Soccer career.
It didn’t go unnoticed.
“It is exciting, because the recipients of the award usually means their team won that week,” Feilhaber said in a release. “Obviously it is more important that almost all of our players are back and healthy. We are in good form and it feels great to contribute to the team.”
Feilhaber played a part in both Sporting Kansas City victories.
After assisting on C.J. Sapong’s first-half goal against the Crew, Feilhaber fired a stoppage-time shot that deflected off the crossbar and into the back of the net to give the club a 2-1 win in Columbus.
The week was just getting started.
Feilhaber scored on a free kick three days later — bending a strike to the upper corner beyond the reach of LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo — to ignite the club’s 2-1 victory against the LA Galaxy on Saturday.
“I was pretty much going for that spot from the get-go,” Feilhaber said after Sunday’s win against the Galaxy. “I was trying to convince those guys to let me take it from that spot. We all have our ranges. Mine is definitely inside 25 (yards). So for the most part, I’m usually going to win that battle.”
Feilhaber is the second Sporting KC player to earn the player of the week honor this season. Graham Zusi was named the player of the week in the opening month of the season.
