Sporting Kansas City welcomed back some much-needed help to its defensive line Tuesday.
Center back Aurelien Collin returned to the lineup after a two-game setback with a hamstring injury. He paired with homegrown defender Kevin Ellis to form the center of the Sporting KC defense against a dangerous New York Red Bulls offensive attack. A natural fullback, Ellis made his second straight appearance at center back, starting in place of Matt Besler, who is with the United States men’s national team for its World Cup preparation.
With fullback Chance Myers out for the season following surgery Wednesday to repair a ruptured Achilles’ tendon, Igor Juliao was awarded the start at right outside back. Seth Sinovic assumed his usual spot on the left side of the four-man back line.
Juliao nearly scored in the second minute after a long run down the right side, but his shot was cleared off the line by New York defender Chris Duvall.
Erik Palmer-Brown was one of seven substitutes made available for the match, though he did not appear. Palmer-Brown, 17, served a one-game mandatory suspension Friday after he was shown two yellow cards in his MLS debut on May 18 in Chicago.
Defensive midfielder Uri Rosell missed his third consecutive match with a groin strain. In Rosell’s absence, Benny Feilhaber shifted to the holding midfield role.
