The countdown is on.
Sporting Kansas City will kick off the MLS regular season schedule only two weeks from Saturday, opening with a match in Seattle on national TV.
In the meantime, the team is slated to continue its final preparations Saturday with another group play match in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. Sporting KC will battle Fluminense FC U23 of Brazil at 2 p.m. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
Sporting KC defeated the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Wednesday in the opening stage of group play.
While manager Peter Vermes was less than thrilled with his first team’s effort in the match, he continues to be impressed with the club’s younger players, a group fighting for playing time.
There’s certainly plenty of plenty time to be had, especially early in the schedule. With a pair of CONCACAF Champions League games against Cruz Azul added to the March schedule, Sporting KC will play seven matches in the first month of the season.
“A lot of the young guys have made a big step forward this year,” Vermes said. “I’m very happy with their progression and what they’re starting to add to the team. I can see them getting minutes in some of the competitions that we’re going to play in this year. Hopefully they’re going to contribute in a very meaningful way.”
