What a year it was for soccer in Kansas City. The fact that Sporting KC claimed the MLS Cup just put the cherry on top of what already was a 2013 to remember.

By the time Aurelien Collin, Jimmy Nielsen and company hoisted the Cup this month, Sporting Park had become the first MLS venue to host an MLS Cup, a U.S. men’s national team match and the MLS All-Star Game in the same calendar year.

You remember the July 31 MLS All-Star Game, right? For nearly a week, Kansas City was the center of the U.S. soccer universe as national-team dignitaries and MLS stars from across the league — not to mention musical acts like Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Silversun Pickups — rubbed elbows with Kansas Citians at a variety of events around town.

Never mind that the All-Stars lost 3-1 on game day to A.S. Roma — it was a day, and a year, we’ll not soon forget.
