Sporting Kansas City’s preseason continues with the final game in group play in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at 7 p.m. Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
So far, manager Peter Vermes is pleased with what he’s seen from his club, which has won two straight MLS Eastern Conference regular-season crowns.
“We’ve taken all our preseason games as very good progress, but it still paints a picture that we have a lot to work on,” Vermes said. “We’re ahead of schedule in certain aspects, but we have some guys we’re kind of indoctrinating to the team because they’re new.”
There are also some guys who’ve impressed, including defender Jerome Meshack, a trialist from USL Pro affiliate Orlando City SC.
Vermes also singled out midfielder Christian Duke, a Shawnee Mission South graduate who Sporting KC chose in the supplemental from San Diego, as reserves who’ve made a strong impression.
“I wouldn’t say it’s one specific position, but some guys have done well and opened up your eyes,” Vermes said.
Sporting KC will play one more game next week in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic after group play is finished and teams are paired off.
