Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara won’t stop talking about this goal anytime soon.
Nor should he.
Opara secured the club’s highlight-reel goal of 2017 in the first half Saturday against the LA Galaxy — a form of a bicycle kick that hopped over keeper Clement Diop for Sporting Kansas City’s second goal of the evening in Los Angeles.
In the 35th minute, Sporting’s Matt Besler lofted a bass into the penalty area. Opara squeezed through the Galaxy defense, turned his back toward the goal and kicked the ball as he fell to the ground. It lofted over his own head and the head of Diop before bouncing into the net.
The reaction from Opara’s teammates told the story. Dom Dwyer held his hands on his head in disbelief.
Opara has 11 goals in eight MLS seasons, including two in 2017.
