FC Kansas City announced on Tuesday that it had come to an agreement and signed first-round draft pick Kassey Kallman.

Kallman, a defender from Florida State, was the fifth overall selection in the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League Draft. She was the first player from Florida State to be selected ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was also a member of the U.S. National Team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Championship in Japan.

“Our team strategy relies on solid defense leading to quality scoring chances,” FC Kansas City coach Vlatko Andonovsk

said in a press release. “Kassey’s leadership and toughness will fit right into our team philosophy, and working with Becky (Sauerbrunn) and Leigh Ann (Robinson) will help to make her an even better player.”

After four exhibition games, FC Kansas City will kick off its NWSL season against Sky Blue FC on April 12 at UMKC’s Durwood Stadium.
