Five days after FC Kansas City fell to Portland in the National Women’s Soccer League semifinals, Blues coach Vlatko Andonovski picked up a new gig.
Don’t worry, he’s retaining the old one, too.
Andonovski was announced Thursday as the new head coach of the Missouri Comets, a promotion that comes after serving as an assistant for three seasons.
He has no plans to leave his post as the FC Kansas City women’s coach. The two franchises, who have the same ownership group, do not conflict in schedule.
With the Comets, Andonovski replaces Kim Roentved, who recently resigned after three years as head coach. Roentved led the Comets to the Major Indoor Soccer League championship last fall, when they lost to the Baltimore Blast.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” Andonovski said in a release. “I have learned so much from Kim, and I am anxious to get this season started.”
Indoor soccer will provide a familiar setting for Andonovski, who played professional indoor soccer for four franchises, including the Kansas City Comets. He was a two-time all-star selection with Kansas City.
In addition to Andonovski, the Comets also announced Thursday the addition of assistant Goran Karadzov to the coaching staff. Karadzov served an assistant for FC Kansas City in its inaugural season this summer.
“I cannot express my gratitude enough for what (Roentved) has done for this organization and Kansas City soccer in general,” team president Brian Budzinski said. “Vlatko is ready to carry on the tradition of Comets soccer and help bring home the MISL championship that our fans deserve.”
