FC Kansas City closed out the NWSL regular season with a 1-1 tie against the Houston Dash on Sunday at Swope Soccer Village.
The Blues, 8-9-7, struck first in the 9th minute when midfielder Desiree Scott sent a cross into the box to Maegan Kelly, who headed it in. It was Kelly’s fifth goal of the season, tying her for second on the team with forward Shea Groom.
FC Kansas City almost scored again in the 18th minute when forward Sydney Leroux beat Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell. But Campbell came up with a diving save and pushed it out for a corner.
The Blues again came close to a second goal after Dash defender Bruna Benites fouled Groom right outside the box. That set up a free kick by defender Brittany Kolmel, but the shot was handled by Campbell.
Never miss a local story.
The second half started similar to the first half, with FC Kansas City controlling possession. But Houston tied it up in the 53rd minute when midfielder Kristie Mewis slid the ball across to forward Rachel Daly, who put it in the back of the net.
FCKC goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart came up with a big save in the 89th minute on a point-blank shot by Dash defender Camille Levin.
