The plan was to give catcher Salvador Perez the day off. But things changed when Lorenzo Cain began serving his two-game suspension on Sunday.
Instead, Perez started and played six innings, giving way to Erik Kratz. The Royals trailed 6-0 on their way to a 6-4 loss to the Tigers.
“I wanted to try giving him a day off, but we didn’t have enough offense in there to take Sal out,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “When it got to 6-0, I made the determination to save his legs for three innings.”
Kratz picked up his first RBI of the season, on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Never miss a local story.
Brandon Finnegan gave the Royals two solid innings of relief, surrendering no hits while striking out three and walking one.
“Very encouraged,” Yost said. “I like his 97-mph fastball, good slider and throwing strikes. What’s not to like about that?”
