Jeremy Guthrie allowed only two hits in 5 2/3 innings Thursday as he made his return to Cactus League action in a 3-0 Royals victory over Seattle.
The Mariners could not notch a hit until Nelson Cruz’s leadoff single in the fifth. Guthrie collected a pair of strikeouts and did not issue a walk. He had missed a start because of a stomach virus and made his next outing in a minor-league game.
“I was able to throw all my pitches for strikes,” Guthrie said. “Felt healthy and strong, which obviously is the most important thing for everybody, to feel like you’re getting your strength up. We’re getting toward the end of spring.”
Facing Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, Kansas City connected for a run in the third inning. Christian Colon raked a leadoff double, his third of the spring, and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Jarrod Dyson.
The Royals tacked on in the eighth on a two-run single by infielder Ryan Jackson.
