If you made a list of thankless jobs in sports, what would you put on it?
A long snapper in the NFL? How about a referee/umpire/official? In both instances, there is little credit to be given, but lots of abuse if something goes wrong.
I’ll add this one: grounds crew member.
We usually don’t think about them until bad weather comes, and if they don’t do their job right, it’s chaos. And criticism sometimes follows from fans. I mention this because being on a grounds crew and getting a tarp on the field requires a lot of hard physical work.
Turns out it’s not easy getting the tarp rolled back up either, particularly if it’s a windy day. Take a look at the challenge that faced the Royals crew on Wednesday before the Royals’ game against the Yankees in the video above from The Star’s John Sleezer.
