Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer hasn’t been part of the Royals’ surge of August, but he’ll get a taste of a pennant race starting Saturday.
Hosmer, recovering from a fractured bone in his right wrist, will join Class AAA Omaha to begin a short rehab assignment. He’s expected to finish Omaha’s regular season, which ends on Monday, and if the Storm Chasers make the postseason, Hosmer will remain. The idea is for him to get 20 at-bats, Royals manager Ned Yost said.
The catch: Omaha started Friday 1 1/2 games out of first place and needs to win the American Conference North Division to reach the postseason.
If Hosmer gets only three games in Omaha, he’ll suit up for Idaho Falls of the Pioneer League. The Chukars play at Ogden, Utah on Monday.
“Looking forward to getting live at-bats,” Hosmer said. “We’ve gone through all the steps here. I’ve had multiple days of batting practice, and it’s responded well. No soreness. The next step is game at-bats.”
