AUSTIN, Texas | With the nation watching, Kansas coach Mark Mangino showed a softer side. He walked onto the field to check on his injured players, even trying to help freshman running back Toben Opurum off the ground. He told a referee that he was “a good man.” He gave sophomore Daymond Patterson a big ol’ hug after a long punt return. You could have called it a Bear hug.

AUSTIN, Texas | If the Kansas athletic department’s investigation into KU coach Mark Mangino’s treatment of players results in the school firing Mangino for cause, that decision could spark a battle for more than $6 million, according to Mangino’s contract. Mangino would be given a 21-day window after his firing to submit a written appeal of his termination to either KU chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little or athletic director Lew Perkins. The appeal would be reviewed by a three-person committee appointed by Gray-Little, comprised of faculty or professional staff employees, one selected by Gray-Little, one selected by Mangino and one agreed upon by both parties. Mangino would have the right to attend committee meetings and have legal counsel.

AUSTIN, Texas | Todd Reesing grew up about five minutes from Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and used to attend Texas home games with his father, Steve, a Texas alum. With Reesing’s roots planted here and having sprouted all the way up to Lawrence during the last four years, tonight’s game between the Jayhawks and Longhorns was supposed to be the perfect celebration to cap the career of the most prolific quarterback in KU history.

That gives a man time to think, and Henry did some just minutes before tipoff of a game he knew he would play — finally — when a video of Kansas basketball highlights played on the Allen Fieldhouse scoreboard.

Kansas coach Mark Mangino went on a lengthy rant Thursday night during his weekly radio show “Hawk Talk” on KCSP 610 AM, calling out some of the parents of his players and the former players who have spoken out against him. “Let’s take a look at this,” Mangino said. “We’ve improved graduation rates here for football. We have set semester records for team GPA. We’re graduating kids, we’re putting kids out into the world that are prepared. But I can’t do the work of some parents, what they should have done before they got to me. There’s some things for 18 years that happened in their lives that I can’t change in four years of college. Can’t change their behaviors, can’t change their attitudes.

Even as losses piled up, Kansas wasn’t part of the late autumn coaching-carousel discussion. Mark Mangino, the thinking went, banked enough equity in the program’s successive bowl seasons, to withstand even a last-place finish in the division. But this week’s revelations have altered the outlook, and Mangino is no sure bet to reach a ninth season in Lawrence, or even finish this season.

LAWRENCE | Kansas football coach Mark Mangino poked senior linebacker Arist Wright in the chest during a Friday walkthrough practice the day before the game at Colorado, sources told The Star on Tuesday evening, triggering an athletic department investigation of Mangino. On Monday night, KU athletic director Lew Perkins met with the entire football team to discuss concerns relating to Mangino’s treatment of student-athletes. One of those concerns came from Wright, a starting player who sources say told Perkins of his incident with Mangino. At the meeting, where Mangino was not present, KU players were invited to bring information in front of a formal panel that, according to quarterback Todd Reesing, would be unbiased and from outside of the athletic department.
