Dogs will have their day at the K on Sunday

If you have a friend who loves to bark at the Royals, then bring him or her to Kauffman Stadium on Sunday. I’m talking about your dog. It’s the fifth annual Bark at the Park for the Royals’ 1:10 p.m. game against the Angels.

Oxbow wins Preakness, denies Orb the chance to win Triple Crown

Oxbow has won the 138th Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. Kentucky Derby winner Orb finished fourth, meaning there will again be no winner of horse racing's Triple Crown. Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 15th Triple Crown victory, most in horse racing history.

The Royals miss an opportunity

According to the guys on TV, James Shields has now gone at least eight innings five times and hasn’t won any of those games. Some of that can be explained by match-ups: number one pitchers tend to face other number one pitchers—at least early in the season—so the lack of run support for Shields isn’t surprising considering who was pitching for the other teams. But this game appeared to be a mismatch: James Shields against Jarrod Parker. Parker had an ERA over 6.00 coming into the game and Shields is one of the best pitchers in the league. James not only pitched eight innings, he struck out nine, only walked one, gave up just two runs and still didn’t win.

Royals again offer little support for Shields in 2-1 loss to A’s

James Shields continues to pitch like the No. 1 guy the Royals expected when they acquired him in that big off-season deal from Tampa Bay. And the Royals continue to waste his efforts. Shields gave up two runs Friday night in eight innings but only found more disappointment when the Royals’ attack again went quiet in a 2-1 loss to the Oakland A’s at the O.co Coliseum.

Dyson returns to Kansas City after going on disabled list

Outfielder Jarrod Dyson is expected to miss two-to-four weeks after being diagnosed Friday in Kansas City with what trainer Nick Kenney termed “a mild high ankle sprain.” Dyson, 28, suffered the injury in the eighth inning Wednesday when he scaled the center-field wall at Angel Stadium in pursuit of a Mike Trout homer against Kelvin Herrera.

Chiefs searching for clear-cut second receiver alongside Dwayne Bowe

The Chiefs are working to develop one or more receivers capable of helping Dwayne Bowe (center) boost their passing game. Jon Baldwin is the other starter with Bowe and leads the list of candidates, but hasn’t yet emerged as the dominant offseason player he was last season before faltering when the games started. Other candidates are Terrance Copper (left) and Dexter McCluster (right).

Royals outfielder Dyson likely to go on the DL

The Royals' outfield could be getting a new look as soon as Friday night. All signs point to the Royals putting outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the disabled list because of an ankle injury he suffered Wednesday at Anaheim when he climbed the wall attempting to catch a Mike Trout home run.

Comparing Salvy Perez's awesomeness to other catchers

Sam Mellinger looked at Royals catcher Salvy Perez's OPS+, which says Perez is off to a slightly better start offensively than — ahem — Joe Mauer. Now, obviously this doesn’t mean Perez is going to win batting titles and lead the league in batting, on-base and slugging someday like Mauer has. But it is a strong point that his bat is coming along much faster than most scouts thought.

Royals did what good teams do: Beat up on a bad team

Everybody loves the big pitching matchups — your ace faces their ace — but those games are toss-ups, and either team could win. Then there are the games you should win and can’t afford to lose; not if you’re going to put together a winning record. This was a game the Royals should have won and did. Beating up on bad teams is what good teams do.

Chiefs sign K-State’s Wilson

The Chiefs have signed fullback Braden Wilson of Kansas State, the second of the team’s two sixth-round draft picks. Wilson is the fourth of Kansas City’s eight selections to sign with the club.
