All hail the Missouri Mavericks. That’s the name of the new minor-league hockey team scheduled to begin play in Independence in November. Franchise officials announced the team name, along with its colors and logo, at a Truman Library news conference Wednesday.

Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Brian Leetch are going into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The selection committee announced on a conference call Tuesday it had elected the maximum four players this year. All were eligible for the first time.

Billionaire Jim Balsillie failed in his bid to have a bankruptcy court judge order the Phoenix Coyotes sold to him and, over the NHL’s objection, moved to Hamilton, Ontario. His downfall was his self-imposed June 29 deadline for completing the deal.

Looting and vandalism that broke out in the aftermath of the Los Angeles Lakers’ basketball championship won’t keep the city from celebrating the team’s victory: City officials and the Lakers are planning to foot the bill for a victory parade they hope will overshadow unrest the police chief blames on a mob of “knuckleheads.” Police reviewed security video and media images Monday to identify suspects who caused damage downtown the night before. Police Chief William Bratton said known gang members were in the crowd.

When the NHL season began, I thought I would have more time to try to learn the sport. I didn’t. However, that didn’t keep me from picking two teams — something I have done the past several years. Admittedly, I’m not going to pick two teams that have no chance, but at the same time, my primary requirement was that they be expected to score a lot of goals. So I chose Pittsburgh and San Jose. For most of the season, it looked like I had one half of my picks right, as San Jose threatened to make a joke out of the West. But eventually, the Sharks leveled off and shot blanks in the playoffs. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, was extremely mediocre for the first half of the season.
