A 17-year-old junior on Maranatha Christian Academy’s boys basketball team made one heck of a shot Tuesday.

Mikey Brown of Bonner Springs sank a 70-foot, buzzer-beater that sent the game into overtime.

The shot came during the Maranatha Eagles’ first-round game against the McClouth (Kan.) Bulldogs in the McClouth Invitational Tournament.

“The game was close all the way through, each team holding the lead at some point,” said Dave Keener, athletic director for Maranatha.

“It came down to the last three seconds with McClouth up by three,” Keener said. McClouth had a player at the free-throw line and had pulled the rest of the team back to defend at half court.

The McClouth player missed his free throw, and Brown rebounded, dribbled once and heaved the ball across the court.

It swished through, and the game was tied at 80-80.

“It was a packed gym — our game was running late and there were two teams waiting to play,” Keener said. “Everybody went crazy. Even the fans who had just come in and were not affiliated with either team It was pretty chaotic.”

Maranatha, which is in Shawnee, lost the game 88-87 in overtime.

This time, Marantha’s last shot didn’t fall in. Instead it bounced three times on the rim.

“They had called timeout and executed a play well,” Keener said. “It just didn’t quite go in.”
