The five male finalists for the 62nd annual DiRenna Award have a common characteristic — their teams remain in the hunt for a state championship.
Barstow senior Jeriah Horne, Liberty North senior Michael Hughes, Blue Springs South senior K.J. Robinson, Lee’s Summit senior Blake Spellman and Shawnee Mission North senior Michael Weathers were announced Monday as the finalists for the award, reserved for the top player in greater Kansas City.
For the girls award, Truman junior Kierra Collier, Blue Valley North senior Micaela Delagarza, Liberty senior Morgan Fleming, Belton junior Courtnie Lewis and Lawrence Free State junior Madison Piper were selected as the five finalists.
The winners of the award will be announced April 7 at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park.
Blue Springs South’s Kevin Puryear and Leavenworth’s Tyler Johnson won the honors last season.
