The numbers were already impressive for St. Thomas Aquinas, and with its 6-0 win over Harmon on Saturday in the Class 5A state championship boys soccer game, they became even gaudier. Two straight titles. Eight in the last 11 years. A total of 16 state crowns.
Led by senior Lauren Harrell’s first place finsh, the Maranatha Christian Academy girls cross country team repeated as Kansas Class 2A state champions. The boys completed the sweep with a 2A title of their own.
Olathe East, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Miege all win Kansas state volleyball championships, while Olathe Northwest and St. James Academy place second. Blue Valley Northwest took third place, while Louisburg was fourth.
Olathe East junior Darby Gertsema nailed her final vault with a score of 9.65, tied for the third best score in state meet history, and won the all-around title Saturday at the Kansas State Gymnastics Championship.
