Five days after he led Fort Osage to its first football state championship in school history, senior quarterback Skylar Thompson was named the Missouri Gatorade player of the year Thursday.
The award recognizes the combination of athletic achievement, academic excellence and exemplary character.
Thompson, who has signed with Kansas State, accounted for seven touchdowns in the Indians’ 63-28 rout against Chaminade in the Missouri Class 5 championship game Saturday.
He concluded his senior season with 25 passing touchdowns and 21 rushing touchdowns. He threw for 2,128 yards and ran for 1,099.
Thompson is on track to graduate from Fort Osage at the end of the semester and plans to begin classes at Kansas State next month.
