With the high school basketball season upon us, The Kansas City Star’s girls preview zeroes in on five players to watch this season.
Kierra Collier, Truman, senior
A Washington signee, Collier might be the best pure scorer in the area. She is a 5-6 point guard who is ranked as the No. 55 recruit in the country, according to ProspectsNation.com. A year ago, she posted 22.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 2.5 assists per contest.
Breon Gunnels, Southeast, senior
Never miss a local story.
In her first career high school game, Gunnels posted a triple-double. It’s been on cruise control ever since, and Gunnels averaged better than 20 points per game last season. She signed with Northern Iowa.
Aaliyah Johnson, Lee’s Summit North, senior
Johnson is a force in the post and will churn out double-doubles with regularity. Along with younger sister Aiyana, she is part of the one of the most menacing front courts in the area. Aaliyah signed with Stephen F. Austin.
Courtnie Lewis, Belton, senior
The driving force behind the Pirates’ run to the Missouri Class 5 quarterfinals last season was Lewis, who can score from the post and also from the outside. After averaging 20.3 points per game last year, she signed with Eastern Michigan.
Chandler Prater, North Kansas City, sophomore
After her freshman season, Prater was named the Suburban White Conference player of the year. She is a small forward who can contribute on both ends, and she will be heavily leaned on for a team that graduated five seniors.
