Pernice captures Champions title

Tom Pernice Jr. of Kansas City gained his third career Champions Tour victory Sunday, winning the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines, Iowa.

Pernice birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff with Doug Garwood. Pernice shot a 3-under 69 in the final round, tying Garwood at 12-under 204.

Pernice and other Champions Tour players are in Ridgedale, Mo., this week for the Legends of Golf. The tournament starts Friday.

PGA: Hideki Matsuyama earned his first victory in America, making a 10-foot par putt on the first extra hole to win the Memorial in Dublin, Ohio. Matsuyama birdied the final hole of regulation and shot 3-under 69 in the final round. He and Kevin Na, who had a 64, finished at 13-under 275.

LPGA: Stacy Lewis won the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway Township, N.J., and took the top spot in the world ranking from Inbee Park. Lewis finished with a 4-under 67 and won by 6 shots witrh a 16-under 197 total.
