College basketball regular season has been irrelevant, boring

< Previous page

It would also be nice if the NCAA would do something creative to place importance on the college basketball regular season. I’d move the conference tournaments to the first week in January and pass a rule that only a regular-season conference champion could receive a No. 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The TV talking heads spend way too much time in December and January talking about March. You can watch a regular-season game and have no idea whether the outcome will impact the conference race.

Oh, and let me add one more thing. I hope I never have to suffer through another college basketball season without Dick Vitale ranting and raving about someone being a “PTPer.” People love to criticize Vitale for his over-the-top exuberance and hyperbole. Not me. Vitale missed a big portion of this season after having throat surgery. Man, was he missed.

It doesn’t feel like a big game when Vitale is absent. It’s the equivalent of a championship prizefight without Michael Buffer booming “Let’s get ready to ruuuuummmmmble.”
