Seeing Reesing will be awkward after falling for Blaine

More News

“Jason, it’s only going to be awkward if you’re not sure Blaine Gabbert is the one,” Dr. Brian Anthony Homer reminded me Thursday during our weekly therapy session. “If you believe in your heart what you told me last week, things will be fine on Saturday.”

Dr. B.A. Homer, Kansas City’s leading sports therapist, spent the majority of our meeting reassuring me that I could handle seeing Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing again. The undefeated and 22nd-ranked Jayhawks take on Duke Saturday morning, and I’m covering the game.

“Jason, just be strong and act like it’s no big deal when you see him, no matter how many touchdown passes he throws,” B.A. Homer advised. “He’s playing Duke. It’s not like he’s going to light up a Big Ten powerhouse like Illinois.”

I know, Doc. It’s just going to be so awkward seeing him again. The last time I saw him, he was awesome. He threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns at Arrowhead Stadium. He hit Kerry Meier for the game-winner that beat Mizzou.

“But you never committed your heart to Reesing. You liked Reesing and Chase Daniel last season. It just depended on the game. You flirted with many quarterbacks last year. If I remember, last season you were really into Nate Davis.”

Come on, Doc. That’s gross. Nate was Ball State family. He was like a little brother to me. The thing with Reesing was different.

“Oh, Jason, the truth is Todd Reesing isn’t your kind of quarterback. He doesn’t have the kind of body you like in a quarterback. You never liked Doug Flutie. You don’t like short, mobile quarterbacks. You fall in love with tall, sturdy, drop-back QBs who can hang in the pocket. Reesing was nothing more than a fling, a QB to pass the time while you waited on someone like Gabbert.”

I know. I know. But it’s still going to be awkward. And what am I going to write after the game? What if Reesing has a great game and the Jayhawks look better than Mizzou? If I write a positive column, will Blaine think I’m cheating?

“Just write about Mangino. He’s clearly the best coach in the Big 12 North, maybe in the whole conference. I’ve been trying to hook you up with a BBW for years.”

A BBW? Did you just call Mark Mangino a BBW?

“Yes, he’s a Big Big Winner. He’s won a BCS bowl game. Gary Pinkel has never even played in a BCS game. BBWs need lovin’ too, Jason.”

I guess I could write about Mangino. He’s exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“But don’t be afraid to praise Reesing. You don’t want Blaine Gabbert to think you’re easy. Make him jealous. You went all gaga two weeks ago, and Gabbert looked rattled last week against Bowling Green. You have to be unpredictable early in a relationship. You can’t wear your feelings on your sleeve. Learn from your mistakes with Jeff George. You spoiled him. Gave him too much attention early.

Doc, why would you bring up Jeff? You know how painful this has been, ending that relationship, moving on from a 30-year football love affair. We agreed not to talk about Jeff!

“I’m sorry. I just don’t want you to repeat the same mistakes. You rush into these relationships with these young quarterbacks and you never take the blinders off and see the flaws.”

I wasn’t aware Jeff had any flaws. He just got too old. And are you trying to insinuate Blaine Gabbert is flawed?
