THE MASH-UP: SPORTS AND POP CULTURE COLLIDE

Noose: Stupidity squared

Two stories dominated this week the way people who have resolved to lose weight dominate health clubs in January — the noose on the cover of Golfweek and the NFC championship.

Slipping

Golfweek magazine has replaced the editor who decided to illustrate the cover of the magazine with a noose.

The cover image — which cost Dave Seanor his job — was supposed to draw attention to coverage of the controversial comment made by Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman about Tiger Woods. Tilghman said Jan. 4 that to stop Woods, other golfers should “lynch him in a back alley.” She was suspended by the network for two weeks because of the insensitivity of the remark.

Of course the magazine would cover this story, even if Woods, through his agent, called it a “nonissue.” And the decision to put a noose on the cover was bold and provocative and certain to attract attention — and probably boost sales.

And dumb. A terrible idea.

The cover didn’t attract attention to the issue, only to itself.

Everyone involved in this decision should have known better.

Climbing

The NFC championship game set for Sunday in Green Bay is getting the type of attention that is usually reserved for 90-year-olds on the dance floor at a hip-hop club on a Friday night.

Apparently, “Seinfeld” is Giants quarterback Eli Manning’s favorite show.

Because of this the TV station WLUK in Green Bay won’t air regularly scheduled “Seinfeld” reruns tonight. Jay Zollar, the station’s general manager, put it this way: “We do not want to give any comfort to the enemy, whatsoever, when come into town.”

Way to tell ’em.

But Giants defensive end Michael Strahan pointed out to reporters on Thursday that this really won’t be all that inconvenient since “Seinfeld” is on DVD.

Good point.

And Jerry Seinfeld said he’s going to send Manning “a complete collection of ‘Seinfeld’ DVDs and a partial collection of ‘Hogan’s Heroes’ for inspiration.”

Wait a second, can’t Manning afford to buy his own DVDs? Why is it that rich guys get all the free stuff? And I used to love “Seinfeld,” but it got hard to watch after Michael Richards went on that racist rant in November 2006.

Anyway, a Super Bowl between the Packers and Patriots would be the highest-rated TV program in history.

And should the Packers win the Super Bowl, well, in 100 years Brett Favre will have replaced Paul Bunyan in American folklore. People would wear No. 4 Green Bay jerseys to weddings. And, his name would instantly become an adjective synonymous with astounding.
