Authorities have identified a man who died Monday following on a Kansas highway shooting as 30 year-old Oscar Sanchez-Escamilla of Kansas City, Kan.

Suspect in Overland Park shootings faces two types of murder charges

Frazier Glenn Cross Jr., who is better known as F. Glenn Miller Jr., is charged with capital murder and with first-degree murder. A capital murder conviction carries a life sentence without parole unless prosecutors seek the death penalty. A first-degree murder conviction carries a life sentence with no parole possible for at least 25 years.

Paul Temme chased the gunman while on the phone with police, then locked eyes with the man. The shooter raised a handgun and fired at least once. What upsets Temme more than getting shot at, he said, is the bigotry and the hatred behind the shootings. “It’s horrifying to see, the actual remnants” of that bigotry, he said.

Homicide victim predicted his own demise

Two days before Javonte Slayden was lured out of a relative’s house and fatally shot in Kansas City, he gave a photo of his alleged killer to a friend. If anything happened to him, Slayden told his friend on April 4, look for the people in the photograph to be responsible, according to court records. One of the men in the photo, Deandre Whitley, 22, of Kansas City, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Federal hate-crime charges, state charges likely in Overland Park shootings

Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., 73, of Aurora, Mo., could face state murder counts and federal hate-crime charges in the shootings that killed three people Sunday outside the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom in Overland Park. Meanwhile, friends and family are mourning Terri LaManno, the third victim of the rampage, who was visiting her mother at Village Shalom, an assisted living center.

Homicide victim Jamie Newkirk remembered for her joyous outlook

Jamie Newkirk was described by her family as “intelligent, self-confident, energetic and selfless in everything she did.” Newkirk was shot to death Sunday in Overland Park at age 27. Her killer, Jason Crabtree, took his own life, police said. Her smile, laughter and passion for life were the calling cards that friends and co-workers again and again said defined an amazing young woman.

Three face charges in fatal shooting in KC’s East Bottoms

Jackson County prosecutors said Monday that Terrance Brown, 37; Tionna M. Vanross, 27; and Wayne Fielder, 48; all of Kansas City, Kan., were each charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and stealing a controlled substance in the March 10 shooting death of Clite Weibel, 75. Vanross and Fielder also were charged with first-degree burglary.

Homicide snaps a 30-day quiet spell in Kansas City

A man’s shooting death in a parked car Tuesday snapped the streak, which was one day short of the longest stretch in the last 10 years for consecutive days without a homicide, according to data kept by The Kansas City Star. The longest stretch was recorded from June 3 to July 3 in 2007.
