Alabama vs. Florida at Atlanta
The Georgia Dome is where it started for Alabama in late August. Clemson was the fashionable pick that day. Four months later, the Tigers have a new coach and the Tide is playing for the SEC title and a berth in the BCS national championship game. Alabama does it with defense and ball-control offense. The Tide ranks third nationally in scoring defense at 11.5 points and total defense at 248.5 yards. Florida has the nation’s No. 3 offense as quarterback Tim Tebow bids for his second Heisman Trophy. The Gators have averaged 53.7 points over their last seven games, winning each by at least four touchdowns. According to The Associated Press poll it’s No. 1 vs. No. 2, the first in the regular season since top-ranked Ohio State defeated Michigan at the end of the 2006 season.
Mid-America championship
Ball State vs. Buffalo at Detroit (tonight)
One team is undefeated and nationally ranked, the other is 7-5. Both have had incredible seasons. Quarterback Nate Davis leads a Ball State offense that averages 38 points and 455 yards a game. Along the way, Ball State knocked off Navy and Indiana. The Bulls, coached by former Nebraska quarterback Turner Gill, have greatly improved in his tenure. Buffalo was 10-69 as a Division I-A program before Gill.
ACC championship
Virginia Tech vs. Boston College at Tampa, Fla.
A rematch of last year’s game won by the Hokies. Attendance is a big concern for the conference. As of midweek, Tech, by far the better traveling team in the game, had sold 3,000 tickets. In the tough economy, fans are saying they can’t spend for the title game and a bowl game. No Matt Ryan for the Eagles, and Tech is down seven defensive starters from last year, but no matter. Both play excellent defense, and this should be a low-scoring game. Boston College won the regular-season meeting 28-23 in Chestnut Hill. Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor is most dangerous when he’s flushed. The BC starter is Dominique Davis, a redshirt freshman pressed into action two weeks ago when starter Chris Crane broke his collarbone.
Conference USA championship
East Carolina at Tulsa
You’ve heard all about Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford’s outstanding season, but he’s not even the highest rated quarterback in his state. Tulsa’s David Johnson leads the nation in passing efficiency. He’s completed 66 percent and has 44 touchdowns. Both teams got off to great starts but had bumps in the season’s second half. Don’t be surprised if one or both coaches — the Pirates’ Skip Holtz and the Golden Hurricane’s Todd Graham — move on to their next job soon. The winner goes to the Liberty Bowl.
Army-Navy
At Philadelphia
A better-than-expected year at Army, but the Cadets will need to play their best game of the year to have a chance against the Midshipmen, who have become bowl regulars. The game should move along at a brisk pace. Navy ranks 118th nationally in passing. Army ranks 119th.
