Kellogg, Lavin to emcee hoops hall of fame ceremony

Two of college basketball’s top television analysts, Clark Kellogg and Steve Lavin, will serve as master of ceremonies for the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Nov. 22.

The fourth class will be inducted at the Midland by AMC and features legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, whose Michigan State and Indiana State teams opposed each other in the epic 1979 championship game.

Players from both teams are expected to attend the ceremony. Also entering the hall are Johnson’s coach with the Spartans, Jud Heathcote; Memphis State and UCLA coach Gene Bartow; Kentucky State scoring whiz Travis Grant; late Oklahoma star Wayman Tisdale; first NCAA executive director Walter Byers; and USA Basketball executive director Bill Wall.

Among the presenters will be former coaches Bob Knight and Billy Tubbs and former professional star George “The Iceman” Gervin.

General public tickets at $50 remain for the ceremony and can be purchased by calling 913-681-6224.

Two from Kansas City take all-MIAA honors

Two former Kansas City-area high school players won top honors as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Conference announced its all-conference teams.

Northwest Missouri running back LaRon Council, who played at Center, was selected MIAA offensive player of the year after leading the league in rushing for the second consecutive year with 1,202 yards and 16 touchdowns. Washburn linebacker Zach Watkins was picked as defensive player of the year.

Watkins, a senior who played at Truman High, led the league in tackles with 108, the fourth straight year he topped the century mark in tackles.

D-II bowls announced

The postseason slate is set for MIAA teams.

Missouri Western is headed to the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs to meet Augustana, S.D. It’s a rematch of last year’s game won by Augustana.

Nebraska-Omaha will meet West Texas A&M in the first Kanza Bowl in Topeka. Both games are Dec. 5.

MIAA champion Northwest Missouri State is the lone league representative in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Sooners lose more players

Oklahoma has lost three more players for the season.

Coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday that starting offensive lineman Jarvis Jones will miss the rest of the year because of a fractured heel. Jones is the fifth starter the Sooners have lost for the season.

Defensive end Auston English was scheduled to have surgery on an injured ankle tendon Tuesday, and captain Brody Eldridge is out the rest of the year because of a neck injury. Stoops had initially described it as a shoulder sprain.

Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford and star tight end Jermaine Gresham had season-ending surgeries earlier this year.

Avila’s Rudder gets national soccer honor

Avila goalkeeper Renee Rudder won the NAIA defensive women’s soccer player of the week award. Rudder, a freshman from Brisbane, Australia, stopped 15 shots in a 1-0 win over No. 18 William Jewell on Nov. 3, Avila’s first win over William Jewell in program history. Rudder ranks 22nd nationally in total saves with 113 and is ranked in the top 50 in saves per game with 6.28.

Jewell runner in NAIA meet

William Jewell’s Jessica Connery has qualified for the NAIA cross country national championships Nov. 21 in Vancouver, Wash. Connery finished third at the Heart of America Conference meet Nov. 7, becoming the first Jewell woman to qualify for the NAIA cross country meet in eight years.

KU’s Jackson will redshirt

Kansas women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson announced Tuesday that freshman forward Tania Jackson will redshirt this season. Jackson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Lawrence, is continuing rehabilitation for a knee injury that forced her to miss her senior high school season.
