Saturday spotlight on college football

More News

<
Notre Dame beat Navy 43 straight times in a streak that began in 1963. Now the 19th-ranked Fighting Irish have lost to the Midshipmen twice in three seasons under Charlie Weis.

Craig Schaefer sacked Jimmy Clausen in the end zone for a safety with 60 seconds left Saturday, and Navy held on for a 23-21 victory in South Bend, Ind. The last time an unranked Navy team beat a ranked Notre Dame team was 1936.

The win sends Navy into the Texas Bowl and effectively ends any hope Notre Dame, 6-3, had for a Bowl Championship Series berth.

■ Real deal
Max Hall passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns in No. 25 BYU’s 52-0 romp over Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. Hall now has 28 career wins, one off the school record set by Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer during 1988-91.

■ Fraud alert
Florida struggled again on offense, but since the opponent was Vanderbilt, the Gators took a 27-3 victory in Gainesville, Fla. Florida finished with 375 yards, but about a third of them came after many fans had left.

Number of the day
11 No. 6 Texas Christian won its 11th straight game dating to last season and remained in the chase for a BCS bowl berth with a 55-12 win over San Diego State in San Diego.
