Junior guard Samantha Waldron came up with a huge game Monday for UMKC, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Kangaroos from losing 77-69 to Southern Illinois at Swinney Recreation Center.
Waldron scored a career-high 37 points for UMKC (5-5). She hit 15 of 25 shots from the field, including six three-pointers. Kristen Moore added 12 points for the Kangaroos.
UMKC led 18-12 after the first quarter, with Waldron providing eight points. Redshirt junior India Johnson, who went to Shawnee Mission North, scored all six of her points in the opening quarter.
Waldron added nine points in the second quarter as the Kangaroos took a 37-23 lead into halftime.
The Salukis (6-4) cut the lead to eight points after three periods.
Southern Illinois outrebounded UMKC 38-29 in the game, including 23-7 in the second half.
Kylie Giebelhausen scored 17 points for the Salukis.
The Kangaroos play Northern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Roo Holiday Classic finale.
