The UMKC women’s basketball team couldn’t hold off Western Illinois in the fourth quarter and lost 78-65 on Tuesday at Swinney Recreation Center.
After trailing by six at halftime, the Kangaroos led by five with 7:37 remaining, but the Leathernecks closed the game on a 23-7 run.
Senior Kelsey Barrett, who went to Raytown High, hit four three-pointers in the final 14 minutes and finished with 15 points for UMKC, 1-2. Sophomore Kristen Moore added 10 points for the Kangaroos, and junior Kiana Law had nine points and nine rebounds.
The Kangaroos shot 45.1 percent from the field in the game, but 22 turnovers proved costly. The Leathernecks scored 28 points off those turnovers.
Taylor Higginbotham led Western Illinois, 4-1, with 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Emily Clemens scored 20 points and had 10 assists.
UMKC’s next game will be Friday, when they play host to Western Michigan at 1 p.m. in the Plaza Lights Classic.
