Missouri won two Southeastern Conference weekly football awards Monday. Michael Sam is the defensive player of the week and quarterback Maty Mauk is the freshman of the week.
Sam, a senior, won a weekly award for the third time this season after making three sacks in MU’s 36-17 victory over Florida on Saturday. He leads the SEC in sacks with nine and tackles for loss with 13 and ranks second and fourth in the Football Bowl Subdivision in those categories.
Mauk, in his first college start, threw for 295 yards with one touchdown and one interception and ran for a score. He is the only quarterback to throw for more than 164 yards against Florida’s defense this season.
With his two SEC defensive lineman of the week awards earlier this year, Sam is the first MU player to win a weekly conference honor three times in a season since quarterback Chase Daniel was Big 12 offensive player of the week three times in 2007.
MU has won seven SEC weekly honors this season. Coach Gary Pinkel’s 2007 MU team won eight Big 12 weekly honors.
