When Auburn chose Nick Marshall as its starting quarterback last month, the Tigers’ game Saturday at LSU added a sidebar.

Both starting quarterbacks — Marshall and LSU’s Zach Mettenberger — started their careers at Georgia and continued them in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

Marshall was a cornerback and played special teams as a freshman for the Bulldogs in 2011 but was dismissed from the team in February 2012 for violating team rules.

He had played quarterback in high school and returned to the position at Garden City Community College, where in 2012 he passed for 3,142 yards, rushed for 1,095 and accounted for 37 touchdowns while working with Matt Miller, a former Kansas State quarterback who was Garden City’s offensive coordinator last season and is now the head coach. Marshall was chosen Jayhawk Conference player of the year.

K-State and Baylor reportedly offered Marshall, who decided to sign with Auburn and first-year coach Gus Malzahn.

So far so good. Auburn improved to 3-0 last week after a 24-20 victory over Mississippi State, capped by Marshall’s 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end C.J. Uzomah.

In 2010, Mettenberger threw for 2,678 yards and 32 touchdowns for Butler County Community College.

He too had been dismissed from Georgia. In May of his redshirt freshman year, Mettenberger pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery and received two concurrent 12-month periods of probation. At the time, Mettenberger was considered to be in competition with fellow redshirt freshman Aaron Murray. Murray remains the Bulldogs’ starter.

Mettenberger is thriving under the direction of new LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. After three games, Mettenberger has tossed nine touchdown passes with no interceptions.

Mettenberger’s mother, Tammy, is an administrative assistant in Georgia’s football office, and that will be a major story line next week when Georgia faces LSU.
