Redemption is the optimum word for the Kansas volleyball program.
The 21st-ranked Jayhawks will play host to postseason volleyball in Allen Fieldhouse for the second straight year. And this year, the Jayhawks can settle a score with an in-state rival.
Kansas, which earned the No. 14 overall seed when the NCAA tournament field was unveiled Sunday night, will face Wichita State at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Allen Fieldhouse in a first-round matchup. It’s the same Wichita State program that knocked KU out of the NCAA tournament in the second round last year in the same building.
If Kansas wins, the Jayhawks will advance to play the winner of Creighton and Arkansas in the second round at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, with a spot in the Sweet 16 in Los Angeles on the line.
Kansas, 23-7 and 12-4 in the Big 12, finished second in the Big 12 this season behind defending NCAA champion Texas. It was the highest conference finish in school history for the Jayhawks, and they earned a national seed and host site for the second time in school history.
In addition to the recent history with Wichita State, 28-6, the Jayhawks should be familiar with both Arkansas and Creighton. KU split two matches with Arkansas this season, dropping the contest in Lawrence, and also lost a four-set match at Creighton on Sept. 10.
