Kansas freshman Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk landed in Lawrence on Monday night, the last member of Bill Self’s 2014 recruiting class to report to campus, a KU official confirmed Tuesday.
Mykhailiuk, a native of the Ukraine, was late to arrive to school after competing for the Ukraine national team in the FIBA World Cup in Spain earlier this month.
One of the youngest players in the tournament, Mykhailiuk, a 6-feet-8 wing, came off the bench for Ukraine — including some playing time in a loss to the United States. Ukraine did not advance from group play.
Never miss a local story.
While Self has said that Mykhailiuk will be behind his teammates after the late arrival, he does have time to catch up. The Jayhawks, who will hold Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 10, are more than seven weeks from their first exhibition game against Washburn on Nov. 3.
“I’m a little concerned that he’s going to come in well behind, which he will,” Self said earlier this month. “And without putting too much pressure on him, I was hoping he’d be really ready to be a major contributor (in) mid-November. It may take him a little bit more time.”
