Tabor, you see, is the working partner and general manager of the Jared Allen Sports Arena & Grill, a spacious new restaurant/bar on Southwest Boulevard that Tabor and Allen opened in March.
“Up until last week, he and I had no idea a trade might happen,” Tabor said as he welcomed several Wednesday lunch-goers to the place.
“And I tell you what: We’d have never built a restaurant had we known a trade might happen. Never.”
Now, as he looks over the photos on the wall of Allen in a Chiefs uniform, Tabor is left to deal with the aftermath. He hopes he can salvage the dream of running a famous-name restaurant without the famous name around.
“I talk to Jared every day, or at least text every day,” Tabor said. “He still wants to stay involved with it. He loves this place. He loves Kansas City. He was hoping to stay here a long time.
“He’ll be back in here Saturday, as a matter of fact.”
Yet Tabor knows he has some decisions to make. Business is still good. The lunch crowd pours in. The place still hops at night. But will it last?
“I think fans really love Jared,” Tabor said. “This place was packed over the weekend for our draft party. We got over 100 cards from fans wishing him well.
“Will it last? I hope. People have short memories. If he’s not here, that makes it harder. People expect to come in and maybe see him or get an autograph.
“But hey, that’s life in the restaurant business. I’m going to stick with it and try to make it work. No matter whose name is on it, it comes down to whether people like the food or have a good time there. We can provide that.”
Tabor already is brainstorming some options, like making part of the bar a haven for Vikings fans on Sundays. He has even thought about teaming up with another Chief, who hopefully might last longer in Kansas City.
“Maybe someone like Brodie Croyle,” Tabor said. “He’s a great guy. We probably could have gotten Boomer (Grigsby), but he’s gone, too. We even have a Boomer’s Burger still on the menu.
“We’ve had a lot of Chiefs come in and they’ve all been great. But no matter what, it will still be a Chiefs bar.”
Chiefs No. 1?
Too early for the 2009 draft projections? Never too early. Rivals.com has put one out and it has the Chiefs getting the No. 1 overall pick next year — Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Riveting stuff
A Royals rainout on Wednesday night last week actually drew better Nielsen ratings (0.9) in Kansas City than five NBA playoff games for the week.
