April 26, 2003: The Chiefs select Larry Johnson out of Penn State as their first-round draft pick and No. 27 overall. Johnson gives the Chiefs some insurance in case Priest Holmes, who injured his hip in December, can’t return to full strength.

July 17: Johnson ensures he will report to training camp on time when he signs a seven-year contract of between $8.5 million and $9 million, with a $3.3 million signing bonus. He plays six games in the 2003 season.

Dec. 5: Johnson is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of battery after being accused of slapping his girlfriend and threatening her with a handgun during an argument at his home. The Chiefs voice their support.

Feb. 18, 2004: Johnson gets diversion in the case.

2004 season: Holmes, Johnson and Derrick Blaylock offer a balanced scoring attack, with 14, nine and eight touchdowns, respectively.

Sept. 21: Coach Dick Vermeil says Johnson needs to “to take the diaper off and go play.” Johnson has been unhappy about his playing time.

Oct. 19: Despite rumors that he may be headed to Tampa Bay or Dallas, the trade deadline passes with Johnson still a member of the Chiefs.

2005 season: Johnson breaks out after Holmes is injured again. Johnson starts only nine games, but he rushes 336 times for 1,750 yards, third in the NFL. He also scores 20 touchdowns. Johnson is selected to the Pro Bowl and chosen Chiefs MVP.

Sept. 13: Johnson is issued a municipal ticket for assault after a complaint that he shoved a woman and tried to drag her out of a Plaza bar.

Nov. 20: Johnson rushes for a team-record 211 yards against Houston.

Jan. 18, 2006: The assault case is closed when the alleged victim fails to appear for a third time.

2006 season: Johnson again gets a Pro Bowl selection and Chiefs MVP honors. He has an NFL-record 416 carries for a franchise-best 1,789 yards, finishing second in the NFL in rushing.

Oct. 29, 2006: Johnson rushes a career-high 39 times for 155 yards and three touchdowns against Seattle.

August 2007: Johnson misses training camp while negotiating a five-year contract extension that pays him $43 million, $19 million guaranteed. He becomes the highest-paid running back in the NFL during that span of extension and the Chiefs’ highest-paid player.

2007 season: Johnson starts eight games but is inactive for seven after a mysterious lingering foot injury and then goes on injured reserve in December. The Chiefs win zero games without him.

Jan. 30, 2008: After weeks of secrecy, Johnson says the foot injury was a cracked bone that was extremely difficult to diagnose.

September 2008: Johnson is charged with simple assault, a municipal violation, after being accused of using his open hand to push a woman on the side of her head at a Kansas City nightclub.

Sept. 15: An unhappy Johnson suggests he’s being phased out of the offense after a 23-8 loss to Oakland.

Oct. 16: The Chiefs bench Johnson for showing up late to team meetings and breaking other rules, three days after his new assault charge comes to light.

Oct. 19: Johnson is involved in a spitting incident with a woman at a nightclub that leads to a second assault charge on Oct. 27.

Oct. 22: Johnson says he’s “disgusted” with himself and asks the fans and team for forgiveness. “I anticipate seeking help to get better as far as getting my life on track,” he says, “and knowing what I want out of this life, not necessarily football.”
