With the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, the Chiefs selected Central Michigan offensive lineman Eric Fisher. Read what our reporters were saying during the first round.

Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher moved up many NFL Draft pundits’ boards to the No. 1 overall pick, which the Chiefs will use Thursday night around 7. Here are some excerpts from an interview with Fisher at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Tonight's the night: The Chiefs are set to make the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. What will they do? Is Eric Fisher (pictured) their man? The Star's Sam Mellinger is in New York and Adam Teicher is at Arrowhead, and they answered fans' questions during a web chat earlier today.

In some ways, the Chiefs, in deciding whether to choose Texas A&Ms Luke Joeckel and Central Michigans Eric Fisher with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, are likely choosing between a young man raised for this moment and one grew into it.

Whether the Chiefs’ No. 1 choice in Thursday’s NFL Draft is one of the favorites, offensive tackles Eric Fisher of Central Michigan and Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M, or another player, the pressure is on to select an eventual Pro Bowler or even a Hall of Famer instead of a bust. Only the whole football-loving world is watching. “It’s magnified,’’ general manager John Dorsey said.

The Chiefs and Dolphins have yet to complete the trade that would send left tackle Branden Albert to Miami, but the teams talked on Wednesday about a possible deal for the first time in several days.

The way things look at the moment with Branden Albert unhappy over his contract and the Chiefs going far enough into trade talks with the Dolphins the Chiefs appear set to use the first pick on an unproven left tackle and trade their proven left tackle for a second-round pick. This has been translated by many as the Chiefs essentially giving up the first pick, of creating a new problem to solve instead of focusing on the ones already here.

There is no clear-cut No. 1 in the NFL Draft. Whom should the Chiefs take? Is DE Dion Jordan (pictured) a possibility? The Star's Randy Covitz answered fans' questions during a web chat earlier today.
The Chiefs have the No. 1 overall pick when the 2013 NFL Draft kicks off tonight. Who do you think they should select? Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel (left) is one possibility. Vote in our poll.

Every No. 1 overall pick is Superman on the night he is drafted, and usually for at least a short time afterward. Then things can go sour, as they quickly did for the Cleveland Browns and defensive lineman Courtney Brown in 2000, the Houston Texans and quarterback David Carr in 2002 and the Oakland Raiders and quarterback JaMarcus Russell in 2007.

As fun as it is to make grand declarations about the NFL Draft, its worth remembering that the people making those grand declarations are just guessing. Theres no secret to making a great pick: Scouts, general managers and others work hard, but in the end, they play the percentages.

The No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft isn’t an automatic ticket to success. The Star’s Randy Covitz took a look back at each pick since 2000, and while the last few years have been kind to teams holding the top selection, some mistakes are obvious.
What time is the NFL Draft? What channel is it on? Here’s some basic information about the 78th Annual NFL Draft, which starts Thursday night in New York, where the Chiefs hold the No. 1 overall selection.

Even in this age of seemingly endless draft information, a general manager can go against the grain — and the sentiment of his team’s fans — and make a surprise selection with the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL Draft. This would seem to be a prime year for a surprise pick by the Chiefs given that none of the top available prospects seem to stand out above the others.
