As lifestyle columnist for The Kansas City Star, I have the awesome responsibility of writing about everything under the sun and on most days, I love it.

I started working here in 2002. A year before that I graduated from Norfolk State University with a B.A. in Journalism in 2001. Shortly after, I became a Knight Ridder Rotating intern, spending four months at The Kansas City Star, four months at The Contra Costa Times and four months at The Pioneer Press.

By the end of the internship I was offered a job at The Star. So I left my home state of Virginia and moved to Kansas City. I started off as a general assignment writer for FYI and Preview and within a year I added "The Scenario," a nightlife column, to my duties. Yes, I got to write about clubs and dates and all things fun and fabulous!

Last year, I made the jump to lifestyle columnist, a great but welcome challenge and I look forward to sharing my stories and the stories of Kansas City, with you. My column runs in FYI every Tuesday and Saturday. You can also find me on MySpace at www.myspace.com/jeneeinkc.

Q: Jenee, I just wanted to send a quick note and let you know I am glad you have overcome feeling bitter towards your mom. I too have had ups and downs with my mom , but as I have grown older and now have a little boy of my own I know that life is to short to hold on to the past. This article has touched me. Keep it up as I am a big fan look forward to them every week.

Answered 03/08/07 16:23:33 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Thank you Jessica!

Q: Jenee, I was touched by your article on learning to swim. What your mother did was cruel, and it is wonderful you can attribute that to her illness. If you have it in your heart to forgive her, it will be the best present to yourself. Go see her. But try to make it to your reunion. I didn't have anyone contacting me beforehand, looking forward to see me again. You are special and should nurture those friendships that got you through a tough time.

Answered 03/07/07 18:50:41 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Julie, A lot of people have encouraged me to go to the reunion. And because of you all, I am giving it strong consideration. If I do, you know I will write about it. Thanks so much for your feedback and encouragement.

Q: Jenee Thank you for share your feelings & experiences about living & coping with your mom & her mental illness. As marketing director for local community mental health organization, I would love to share this story with children of our clients or better yet have you come to talk with a group. The strongest message is that it is okay to be angry, withdraw & all the other feelings yet still love your mom at the same time. THANKS!

Answered 03/07/07 18:49:38 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: I appreciate your message. I think so many times we don't realize it's ok to be angry and still love someone. At least I didn't for a long time. Thanks.

Q: Jenee, I read your column regularly and enjoy it. Your column today really hit home with me because my daughter-in-law had a very tumultuous childhood. Her mother had serious mental problems, and she didn't see her father for years. In fact, after thirty years plus she was recently united with her father and his siblings. Her mother died from complications of lupus three years ago and she has learned some startling things. It has been difficult for her to forgive her mother. So I have forwarded your story to her and hope that it will be of some help. Thanks!

Answered 03/07/07 18:48:40 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Thank you Suzanne. And I hope your daughter-in-law starts to heal too.

Q: Jenee, I really love your article and am a fan. I was especially impressed with today's article about your mama. I shared it with my mother-in-law and talked about how special you must be to have succeeded in life. Thanks for sharing a painful time in your life so that others can take away such a good and true message. Kudos to you!

Answered 03/07/07 02:05:19 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: I don't feel any more special than anyone else, but thanks for thinking so kindly of me. I think we all have struggles in our lives and I am slowly learning how to deal with mine and constantly inspired by the strength of people around me. Thank you so much for your feedback!

Q: i'm a seventy two year old grandfather, who started reading your column several years ago just to stay up on the latest so i would know what my grandchildren and other youth were talking about, and seeing you also evolve into a well versed writer and todays column brought back many memories. do it now while she is still alive. because when you look into a casket its to late. keep the articles coming.

A: Thank you so much.

Q: Just wanted to share that today's column completely moved me. Your writing is beautiful and so is your spirit. I appreciate your candor and willingness to show that love, understanding, and thoughtfulness still exist. Many blessings for you and your mama.

A: I sincerely thank you for your blessings and your feedback!

Q: Jenee, read your article this morning. Thank you for sharing your story. I plan to share it with my clients, many of whom have shared similar experiences....however they are all unique. Your experience is allowing you to "minister" to others who are impacted by a parents mental illness. I applaud you for "stepping out" and acknowledging your experience for what it is. A: Thank you so much for your kind words and for that quote. It is beautiful.

Q: Being a man of some 67 years of age and having been to many live jazz trio concerts I have finally reached a point where I do not want to go to any more of them. It is not due to my age but to the fact that the drummer is now allowed to be as prominate as the piano player and he/she just beats the Hell out of drums, cymbals, etc. I thought they were used for rhythm only. I do not consider them as musical instrments as they are limited in variable tones. It is just noise. Why?

Answered 03/05/07 16:45:10 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: I wish I could answer that, but I haven't seen that at any jazz trio show. But I haven't been to many. So, I think the person you could talk to is Joe Klopus, jklopus@kcstar.com. (816) 234-4751. I hope he can give you some answers! Have a great week!

Q: Hey Jenee, I was wanting to know where are the good hangout spots for young singles around the age 23-up. I'm new to the area, and I like hip-hop and blues/jazz dance clubs. So if you know of any, could you please let me know. P.S. Let's X-out the get shot clubs...lol

Answered 02/28/07 16:43:30 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: For blues and jazz, you should try the Blue Room on 18th and Vine. For hip-hop, every first Thursday at the Record Bar Sike and Mr. Mafesto spin and ladies are in free. It's once a month. Also once a month, is Feel Sexy at the Hangout on Broadway, its every third Saturday and Miles Bonny spins reggae, hip-hop, soul and more. Every Sunday at the Peanut on 9th and Broadway, is Hip-Hop and Hotwings, where all four elements of hip-hop come together. Also, Ataxic spins every Saturday at Skybox and he is a very talented DJ. If you are willing to travel, SKU and Konsept spin every Friday at 5401 Johnson Drive.

Q: Jenee, I just read your article about the fire last week. Have you heard about any on-going issues of effects of the black goo that fell over the neighborhood near that chemical facility? Is everything pretty much back to normal over there?

Answered 02/13/07 21:14:54 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Everything is pretty much back to normal. The EPA said the air was fine. But I'm always paranoid that things like that will have some sort of effect. Thanks for writing in!

Q: Jenee, I loved the article about Melissa and the Segway Exprience, but I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed you left me out ;-) I enjoyed the tour with Melissa a great deal and would recommend the experience to anyone.

Answered 01/30/07 21:05:50 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Charlie! Sorry! You rode the Segway with ease, had I mentioned that I would have had to disclose how I almost killed myself several times trying to be cool on a Segway! :)

Q: Amen Jenee. Most of my friends are single, in their mid to upper 20s and they too want to have families of their own. Just because it doesn't happen right away (as soon as one finishes college) or when a person hits 30 doesn't mean it won't happen. Q: Jenee-Friends and I will be in town April 20-22 for a baseball series. After the Saturday game we want to hear some blues music and eat some "good" Kansas City ribs. They don't have to be at the same place (unless you know of any), but would be great if they weren't to far away from each other. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Answered 01/29/07 16:03:51 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Hm. I would go to 18th and Vine, check out the Blue Room where they have live jazz and blues. And for ribs, try Jack Stack and for BBQ, try Gates. You may also want to contact Tim Finn, tfinn@kcstar.com! Have fun!

Q: Awesome article "Where have all the young girls gone?". I only hope that the public, or maybe more importantly Moms, share your concerns and begin to do something about it. What do you believe will help to change this trend?

Answered 01/29/07 16:01:50 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Thanks! I think the more people reject these images and trends, it will push the industry to move a different direction. I really appreciate your feedback!

Q: You mentioned in a past article a club that is open until the wee hours of the morning located off 18th and Highland. What is the name of it and what are the hours again?

Answered 01/15/07 18:06:04 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: The Mutual Musicians Foundation. (816) 471-5212

Answered 01/09/07 16:21:53 by Jenee Osterheldt

A: Radius and Main Street Cafe are the only two I know of, unless you drive to Lawrence. If the two of you take a little trip to Lawrence you should be able to get into most clubs and they have all kinds of music. I will keep asking around and see if I find any other options.
