Paul Horsley

Music has formed who I am, and it daily alters my perceptions of the world and the people in it. I want nothing more than to have others experience what I have: the tragic thrill of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion," the haunting emptiness and alienation of Berg's "Wozzeck," the sheer acid-rock rush of Mahler's Third. Or for that matter, the stabbing pain of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." Music's power, after all, is not reserved for the "longhairs" among us.

Q: Well,Paul - the Ballet opened on Thursday and here it is 11:15 Friday night and no review either in print or online. Thought this was going to change with those new million dollar presses! Whazzup?

Answered 11/28/06 22:23:17 by Paul Horsley

A: The press runs have not yet been streamlined to accommodate regular overnight reviews. In the meantime we are still running reviews on the web the next day and in the paper a day later (or in the case of Friday performances, on Monday).

Q: My husband and I will be moving near Kansas City and are interested in various concert offerings in the area. I was able to locate the KC Symphony series, the Harriman Arts Series, the Lyric Opera of KC, and the Signature series at UMKC. However, I seem to recall that there was a 2005-2006 piano series where some wonderful pianists including Radu Lupu performed, yet I cannot seem to find any such series online. I would appreciate any info on this. Thanks.

Answered 08/22/06 16:46:25 by Paul Horsley

A: You're thinking of the Friends of Chamber Music, which brings world-class pianists to town every season, not to mention great chamber ensembles, early-music groups and educational programs. Their lineup for this season can be found at chambermusic.org.

Q: Hello, In the Arts Section last Sunday, 5/7, there was a tap dancer featured in an advertistement. I believe he was/is scheduled to perform at William Jewell College. Can you please provide his name and more information about when and where he was/is scheduled to perform? Thank you!

Answered 05/15/06 18:22:42 by Paul Horsley

A: That was Savion Glover, in an advertisement for the Harriman Arts Program's 2006-2007 season. He'll be performing (Glover, not Harriman) Nov. 11-12 at the Folly Theater, and though subscriptions to the series are available now, the single don't go on sale until Aug. 15. See harrimanarts.org.

Q: Recently in NY for a Broadway show, an usher came and collected a cell phone from a patron a full fifteen minutes before the show was to start. There was no problem retreiving it after the performance. Why can't that be done in KC? I approach talking audience members and parents of noisy children myself.

Answered 03/23/06 21:50:58 by Paul Horsley

A: The will to improve Kansas City's concert experience in ways like this must come from the managements of the organizations. Several volunteer ushers took my comments in Sunday's Arts section (3-19) personally, when in fact I was aiming my directives about noisy concerts toward their bosses. (Of course I didn't intend for the septuagenarian ushers literally to attack latecomers with a "body block." Lighten up, guys!)

Q: In Sundays paper there was an ad for a concert that I believe has something to do with John Phillip Sousa. My mother-in-law mentioned wanting to attend this concert. But I failed to get the details and our Sunday paper is already gone. Can you please help with the details.

Answered 02/13/06 19:04:41 by Paul Horsley

A: A quick look through our database didn't turn up anything about Sousa. You might try calling StarInfo at (816) 234-4636.

Q: Is there a review of last weekend's "Modern Night at the Folly" dance concert? I've recycled my papers, and I can't find it on the website. Thanks!

Answered 01/21/06 21:04:40 by Paul Horsley

A: Regrettably, we had to pass up the "Modern Night" this time, due to a flood of competing events (Peter Serkin, Royal Philharmonic).

Q: Hi Paul, re:"Anonymous" inquiring about a review of Magic of Christmas, this is not Tim Or Jillien, it is his Dad from Mile 0 on the Alcan highway in Canada. Tim would kill me if he knew about this, it"s just that we live so far away we like to read the reviews, and we missed that one. Cheers John

Answered 01/06/06 00:06:13 by Paul Horsley

A: Thanks for your e-mail, and good to hear from you John. Kansas City loves your son! Please e-mail and I'd be happy to send you the review.

Q: Would you be able to share a mail (or e-mail) address for Maestro Hugo Vianello? I wanted to congratulate him for the MAA special lifetime achievement award. Thank you for your help. Way to go! for the NEW Kansas City Symphony and it's new amazing conductor Michael Stern. It's a fine 'band', no question about that.

Answered 01/05/06 21:48:29 by Paul Horsley

A: The Missouri Symphony Society in Columbia, Mo., which Hugo and Ludy Vianello established in 1970, can be reached through their Web site at www.mosymphony.org. Office and box office administrator Catherine Shanahan said her office would be happy to help you get in touch with Vianello.

Q: As a follow-up to the question of timely reviews, why can't the Metro folks cut reviews to space and print them the following day in the Metro section? Surely, several hundred or more people in one place for a cultural event constitutes a significant presence in the metro area that deserves an immediate response from our friends in print media. Printing reviews in the FYI section several days after the event speaks volumes about the importance the Star places on cultural events. I would argue anytime hundreds or even thousands of people gather for a community wide event, it's important, no matter what the subject matter.

Answered 01/05/06 21:00:36 by Paul Horsley

A: You're preaching to the choir on this! I have struggled for years to make overnight reviews happen, and I'm pleased to report the latest: As of June of this year, The Star's new presses will allow us to print one page of FYI "live," specifically so that concert reviews can get in the next day's paper. I'd like to thank all of you who have complained about this over the years, because it seems to have made a difference.

Q: Sequeira Costa, a concert pianist will perform at Unity Temple on April 2nd. He makes regular appearances as a judge at international competitions, and has played with such orchestras as the BBC Orchestra, London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, and Moscow Philharmonic. Would you be interestested in doing a write-up of him?

Answered 01/05/06 20:56:42 by Paul Horsley

A: Please e-mail me information about this concert, or have the presenter of the program e-mail at phorsley@kcstar.com.

Q: Do you know of an LP box-set of the complete piano works of Beethoven that I could get for around $5.00?

Answered 01/05/06 20:55:32 by Paul Horsley

A: No I don't, Warren, but you do. This letter is from my brother in Washington State, who actually did recently find a complete LP box set of the great Alfred Brendel playing all of Beethoven's solo works. And it cost him $5. For those who still have turntables connected to their home systems, there are still bargains out there.

Q: Please name an acapella vocal ensemble with 10 or fewer members that has a conductor.

Answered 01/05/06 20:51:34 by Paul Horsley

A: This question is doubtless prompted by my comments in a recent review of the eight-voice Octarium that they might achieve better focus and balance with a conductor. Not only can I not name an a cappella vocal ensemble that small that uses a conductor, I can't name another eight-voice vocal ensemble, period. Thus there are no rigid rules about these things. I've heard performances of contemporary chamber music with four or five players that used a conductor simply because they needed to.

Q: Did you or someone else reviewed the Independence 89th performance of the Messiah? If so when will it appear in the paper, or can I pick it up on the internet? If so under what heading?

Answered 01/05/06 20:44:14 by Paul Horsley

A: The Independence "Messiah" was not reviewed this year. We'll definitely try to attend next year.

Q: Do you have a review of the Kansas city symphony performance of the "Magic of Christmas"?

Answered 01/05/06 20:43:41 by Paul Horsley

A: The review, "High-gloss 'Magic' finds its mark," appeared Dec. 19. Usually stories stay on the Web site only a week. Please e-mail me at phorsley@kcstar.com and perhaps we can arrange something.

Q: Paul, you recently decried the dearth of classical music on the radio. You failed to consider satellite radio. Sirius Radio has three classical channels. The hosts are all superbly educated in the medium, the play lists are wide ranging, and the the sound quality is great. It's the best $12 a month a classical music lover can spend. How about a column on Sirius Radio? Specifically, how about an interview with Carmela Martin? I have no financialy stake in the operation. I am just an extremely satisified customer.

Answered 08/31/05 21:40:14 by Paul Horsley

A: Thanks for underscoring the need, which has occurred to me several times lately, for a story on satellite radio. Watch the Star's Arts section in coming weeks. You are right that I don't bring it up when talking about other kinds of radio, chiefly because it's not a "free" means of getting to music. But it is rapidly rushing in to fill the void. I just hope that it doesn't become a nest of greedy monopolies like cable television has.

Q: Paul - Thanks for the story on Rochberg. Do you know if he wrote any keyboard - specifically organ - music? I'd love to get ahold of some. Also, I'm glad that in your piece on Toyota and the LA Concert hall, you included among the data the builder of the organ - Manuel Rosales. We need to keep pushing the need for a real organ in our new hall. Incidentally, Rosales' partner in the Disney hall organ was Glatter-Gotz of Austria. And they have since gone out of business.

Answered 08/31/05 21:37:05 by Paul Horsley

A: You can find plenty of information about Rochberg and his works at his publisher's Web page: www.presser.com/Composers/info.cfm?Name=GEORGEROCHBERG

Q: Paul, you didn't review Michael Stern's last concert of the year with the Kansas City Symphony. It saddens me that you did not attend a very fine performance backed up by your colleague Mickey Coalwell. It is my hope that you will not miss more concerts next year considering that the positive changes occuring over at the Lyric are perhaps the most momentous shift artswise in this city in a long time. By the way, there really isn't any comparison in the sounds Stern and Sanderling can evoke from our local orchestra. I hope that you can admit that at least.

Answered 08/31/05 21:34:56 by Paul Horsley

A: Nothing should be read into my absence from Stern's last concert: A family illness caused me to miss some concerts during that period. As September unfolds, the Star will be making a very big deal out of Michael Stern's happy arrival.

Q: Is there a prejudice against music at KCPT? This station has taken away my subscription to PBS national. Operas and other classical music on PBS are not broadcast here. Other music such as pop or country are either dropped or broadcast in the latest hours.

Answered 08/31/05 21:30:04 by Paul Horsley

A: Classical music is all but gone from public television, and I agree it's criminal (or ought to be) when our local PBS affiliates fail to telecast the few high-end performances that the service still produces. To its credit, Topeka's KTWU-TV is more consistent about showing "Great Performances" and the like than our own local KCPT. (Because I live in Missouri, I'm stuck with the less-enlightened Missouri-side affiliate.)

Q: Just wondering why there was no review of the April 28th concert of the Kansas city Chamber Orchestra. Thanks, Jeannine DeMarco

Answered 08/31/05 21:24:50 by Paul Horsley

A: I wasn't able to attend the concert, and our freelancers were not available either.

Q: You printed a picture of 3 dancers from the Williams Henry Dance Company in the May 8 paper. Is it possible I can get a copy of that picture because one of the individuals is the daughter of a very good friend of mine.

Answered 08/31/05 21:24:02 by Paul Horsley

A: To get reprints of photos, please call StarInfo at (816) 234-4636 and say "Operator."
