Alice Thorson

When I joined the Kansas City art scene as The Star's art critic in 1991, I encountered a small, but serious community of artists, curators, collectors and patrons poised to realize some big plans for developing the city's art resources.

Heaven knows our cultural reputation declines when prominent former Missourians like John Ashcroft decide to cover a bare-breasted historical statue, or Calvin Trillin gasses on in The New Yorker about his nostalgic attachment to the American Hereford Association's landmark plastic bull.

But from the moment I arrived here it was clear to me that the rube stereotype outsiders were prone to apply was a misrepresentation.

Q: Dear Ms Thorson, I understand that there was an article during May of last year about Picasso and Peruvian art. I can't, however, find it on your website. I hesitate to bother you, however, if you have time would you be so kind as to send me the link? Thank you so much in advance for your trouble.

Answered 03/27/06 14:59:40 by Alice Thorson

A: That article, by Theresa Bembnister, ran in the Sunday Arts section on May 29, 2005. It was about an exhibit of Peruvian textiles from the Fifi White collection at the Gallery of Art, Johnson County Community College. It's no longer on our website, but if you'll send me an email, I can email you the article. athorson@kcstar.com

Q: During the year 2005 there was a pictorial article about someone donating a Birger Sandzen lithograph to the Nelson, but I am unable to find it in the archives. Is it possible for you to find that article for me? Thank you for your time.

Answered 02/01/06 21:09:46 by Alice Thorson

A: I checked the Star's archives and talked to Scott Stuart in the marketing and communications department at the Nelson and we're not finding anything. The last print by Sandzen to enter the museum's collection was in 1995. A Sandzen painting, "Long's Peak Colorado," acquired by the Nelson in 1938, was included in the museum's "Bingham to Benton" show last year. The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas, 785/227-2220, might have information about a recently donated lithograph.

Q: Hello. I am the Copyright Coordinator at Montezuma Publishing, a not-for-profit course reader service at San Diego State University. One of our art professors would like to use an article you wrote in her course reader this upcoming Spring semester, and this forum was the only way I could find to contact you. The reader will be sold in the SDSU Bookstore; proper acknowledgment of title, copyright owner and date will be given for all work reprinted with permission. The article we are requesting permission to use is "Conversation with a Peruvian Master: Fernando de Szyszlo" from Latin American Art (Winter 1990). I look forward to your reply.

Answered 02/01/06 20:21:26 by Alice Thorson

A: I believe Latin American Art stopped publishing a good while back. If the writer's permission is sufficient in this case, it is fine with me for you to reprint the article. If you have further questions you can reach me by e-mail at athorson@kcstar.com

Q: Dear Alice, I am a disabled person living in Liberty Missouri, but have been given a unique knack for art. I design my apartment, paint, and make interesting and provoking pieces all the time. I've come to the point in my personal life that I am ready to share my creativity with others, but I do not know where to start. Please give me some suggestions.

A: The Kansas City Artists Coalition would be a good place to start. Their website www.kansascityartistscoalition.org has details about their programs and opportunities for artists.

Q: Dear Ms. Thorson, Sometime within the last two years, my wife and I attended an exhibit at the Topeka Public Library. We enjoyed the work of Philemina Bennett. We are currently interested in purchasing some art for our home and having difficulty finding Ms. Bennett's work. Have you heard of Ms. Bennett or do you know where I can see more of her work? Thank you for your time. Yours truly, Walter Schoemaker

A: Philomene Bennett is represented by the Hallar Gallery in Kansas City, at 4540 Main St., just off the Plaza. The contact person there is Robin Hallar (816)561-5339, who says they have a large inventory of Philomene's work at the gallery, including several new pieces the artist just dropped off. The gallery also told me that Philomene and her husband, Lou Marak, will have a show at Hallar in November. Hope you find some beautiful work for your home.

Q: Do you ever review online installations or artists who display/market their work primarily online? Thanks

Answered 05/31/05 18:40:17 by Alice Thorson

A: Very rarely, mainly because there is so much to cover in the galleries and museums. Once in a while I've done stories or items on specific online projects, and when online art is included in an exhibition, like the recent "Calls to Ecstacy from the Edge of Oblivion at Grand Arts," it gets covered along with everything else.

Q: I was wondering if it would be possible to submit some poetry to the site. I am an unpublished poet looking to get a foot in the door. I appreciate your time in reading thing. Amanda

Q: In forming art reviews, why do you and many other reviewers, it seems, avoid interviews with the artists or direct quotations from them about their work? It seems that an "artist statement" is one thing, and that a writer can get (and often does) a lot of information from the marketing/gallery director, but misses an important element by not speaking with the artist directly. Is this a convention, tradition or preference? Thank you for your time.

Answered 05/31/05 18:34:03 by Alice Thorson

A: Tracy, I'm not sure where you got the impression that we don't speak to artists. I frequently interview artists when I'm writing about their work as does our regular freelancer, Theresa Bembnister. Sometimes we will quote from written statements if an individual expresses him or herself more cogently in print than verbally, but generally, if an artist is available and we're doing more than a quick blurb or advance, we'll talk to the artist directly. Alice

Q: Do you also wear the hat of arts editor for the Kansas City Star? If not, could you tell me who does? We would like to send a press kit for an upcoming exhibition at the Des Moines Arts Center. Name and address would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Answered 05/31/05 18:30:08 by Alice Thorson

A: You can send press kits to me (Alice Thorson, art critic) and to Carol Powers, arts and entertainment editor at: The Kansas City Star, 1729 Grand Blvd., KCMO 64108

Q: I have been hearing about an "Art Walk" held downtown (?) each month. Where can I obtain the particulars on that event?

Answered 10/22/04 20:06:42 by Alice Thorson

A: You must be referring to the Urban Culture Project openings held downtown on the third Friday of every month. The art exhibits are presented in vacant downtown storefronts, and the openings, which are free and open to the public, often include performances and live music. For information, call(816)221-5115 or send e-mail to info@CharlotteStreet.org and you'll be put on the e-mail list for regular updates on projects and events.
