The readers have spoken in this week’s “Praise Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback” contest.
I asked for serious and humorous entries, and attracted a good mixture of both.
The winner of the contest — picked by me — will be named in a different online post later Friday and in print on Saturday in The Star.
A reminder: I left most of the language in the comments the way people submitted them, stripping off their names.
Total votes are boldfaced for the 15 comments selected for the poll.
And thanks for participating!
360 — Governor Brownback is a pious Christian and he loves poor people, especially the working poor. He has proved his love and care for the poor time after time by making certain they are not insured under an expanded Medicaid program, thereby hastening the day they get to meet Jesus in person. That's how much he loves the poor.
348 — Brownback will be hailed by many for what will come to be known as the "Kansas Sacrifice." By demonstrating the failure of so many ill conceived initiatives and containing them to Kansas, Brownback has spared other states and municipalities from committing the same mistakes. In addition, on a personal level he has sacrificed his political career and any presidential ambitions he may have had for the benefit of others.
327 — What has Governor Brownback Done?
What has he NOT done?
Terrific Tax Plans for the Wealthy!
Adventurous Financing Moves!
Deal making that even the Legislature doesn’t know about!
Guns, Guns, Guns!
Advancing Private Schools!
Building the poor’s survival skills!
Hosting Pheasant Shoots and raisin’ cash!
Making sure EVERYONE is in the right bathroom!

See? What are you all complaining about!
211 — Kansas was dismissed as "Flyover Country" or as the home of Dorothy and the Yellow Brick Road. No more! Governor Brownback has gained us national notice. National publications Salon, The New Yorker, Huffington Post, you name 'em! And national TV - MSNBC, Bill Maher, Jimmy Kimmel. Remember, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Thanks, Sam!
197 — Given Governor Brownback's performance, particularly in the areas of education, tax reform and job creation, I would like to shower Governor Brownback with confetti. Could you please let me know where I can get confetti in a one-ton bundle?
190 — When Kansans reflects on Sam’s legacy, they think proudly of . . .
Yes, please!: Guns; Private Emails, Lobbyists, Private School Scholarships, Stone Bridges, Cage Elevators, $25 ATMs limits, exclusive college groups, Tax free Biz, Sales Tax, Shots of Adrenaline, Real Live Experiments, KDOT Sweeps, Driving to Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado to shop!
Definitely No!: Gays; Transgendered in bathrooms, Cruise ships, Teacher Unions, Grand Pianos, Roads, Contingency funds, Medicare Expansion, Supreme Court.
164 — As a neighborhood activist living in midtown KC, it's hard to watch young families move to Johnson County as their kids reach school age. But Governor Brownback is doing his best to see that for KCMO families, the grass will soon be NO greener on the other side of the state line, so maybe those folks will stay in the 'hood!
80 — The best character trait of Sam Brownback is that he seems to desire to honor God. As a result, he values human life both in the womb and the born. He has worked to protect all human life even though he has received much opposition. He has also worked to protect us from terrorists, stood against closing Guantanamo Bay, and fought to show the inadequacy of the affordable healthcare act.
60 — Governor Sam Brownback has made growing the Kansas economy his top priority. His tax cuts had that goal in mind, and they’ve succeeded. Unemployment is down to 4%. Kansas has a record amount of new businesses. Missourians are moving to Kansas to enjoy the tax policy! Governor Brownback has stood firm when critics seek only to diminish him. We are proud that he is fighting for Kansans, and not for the government.
60 — “The Kansas economy is strong, and it is growing.” And thank you Governor Brownback for that! Thank you for cutting taxes on every Kansan. Thank you for fixing the welfare system to get the poorest Kansans back to work. Thank you for investing a record amount into our schools, so that our future will be stronger than our present. Your conservative leadership is second to none!
55 — Every family dreams of their child’s future. Every family wants to give their child the best opportunity for success. Most families invest, scrimp, and save to make those dreams a reality. My family was no different. By signing the ABLE act (Achieving a Better Life Experience), Governor Brownback gave my family—and my younger brother with Down syndrome—a new way to save money for his future.
38 — Property rights serve as the foundation for our most basic liberties. Yet, some in the Kansas legislature were willing to give away those rights and cause harm to our most vulnerable citizens through the passage of SB #338. It grew government’s power to circumvent current eminent domain protections, and weakened the rights of Kansans. Governor Brownback saw this and by vetoing it he shut the door to the abuse of property rights for Kansans.
32 — Kansas has had a AA plus financial rating since 2004. 62% of revenue is designated for education. Education ratings based on NEA, Kansas ranks above the national average and also above its neighbors in almost all categories. Kansas ranks 15th in the nation for quality of life for children. He lLowered taxes. Statistics prove that Brownback has done a respectable job of maintaining Kansas as a quality state, much different than the rhetoric.
42 — Thank you Governor Brownback for being a champion for the people of Kansas. I am convinced that you have the best interests of our citizens at heart. Thank you for the historic $4 Billion in funding for our students! Thank you that there are so many Kansans working right now! Thank you for cutting income taxes by over 30%! We appreciate you and your dedication to Kansas.
