The new year got off to a bad start in the Kansas City area with the shooting death of 7-month-old JaQuail Mansaw in Northeast Kansas City, Kan.
The infant and his mother were wounded by in the drive-by shooting when gunfire tore through their home about 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of North Early Street near Parkwood Park. The mother suffered minor injuries; JaQuail died early Monday at a hospital.
Kansas City, Kan., police are investigating the slaying. The shooting death adds to the drive-by killing of 6-year-old Angel Hooper, who was leaving a 7-Eleven store on Oct. 17 in south Kansas City. Two persons have been charged in that homicide.
The metro area was then shocked on Oct. 26 with the drive-by shooting death of 10-year-old Machole Stewart. Someone fired multiple shots into her family's home in the 1400 block of New Jersey Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. That case remains unsolved.
More than prayer vigils have to follow to put an end to such senseless violence. Outrage from the community over the death of one more child should be a call for action to end the senseless violence.
