Ikea is coming to the Kansas City area with the right idea.
It’s new 359,000-square-foot Merriam store is to open this fall with 2,850 solar panels on the roof. Let’s hope the green innovation will light the way for other retailers to also power their businesses with solar energy.
The installation of the 92,000-square-foot rooftop solar panels should start as soon as the roof to the new store is done, The Kansas City Star reports. The construction is visible from Interstate 35 near Johnson Drive.
The array is being billed as the largest in the Sunflower State. The panels will generate 1.35 million kilowatt hours of energy, reducing the store’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Ikea also has put in a geothermal addition for its heating and cooling system. The Swedish retailer is known for its home furnishings, kitchens, appliances, sofas, beds and mattresses.
