As if climate change weren’t bad enough on its own with severe droughts, glaciers melting, waters rising and more violent storms.
The Center for Naval Analysis Military Advisory Board says the accelerating rate of climate change poses national security risks because of the political conflict it sparks. The New York Times reports that the climate change caused drought in the Middle East is resulting in food and water shortages. That adds to longstanding ethnic tension and violence.
Horrific flooding and landslides in the Balkans are similarly traumatizing parts of Europe. Fears are growing over an estimated 1 million landmines that could go off. They were planted during the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia.
Climate change’s national security threat could help prod naysayers to get behind action to reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse production, which scientists say is behind the increasing temperature of the planet. A united effort has to be behind the planet that we save.
