President Barack Obama is doing the right thing in pushing for pay equity for women and making millions of additional employees eligible for overtime pay.

Women earn 77 cents for every dollar that men make. Raising women’s salaries will benefit families, giving them more disposable income.

That will help the economy because people will have more money to spend. Obama’s efforts to make more workers eligible for overtime also should help the economy.

Instead of companies having employees work longer hours for the same pay, forcing businesses to pay more workers overtime could result in hours being held down. But to achieve the same output, companies will likely have to hire more people to get the work done.

Again, that would benefit the economy, reducing the unemployment rate and pump more money into businesses as people purchase more products and services. Obama’s actions also could have the side benefit of helping Democrats in the midterm election.
